Course description:
A course applying in practical examples and somewhat supplementing the theoretical material taught in Optics. Fermat’s principle, Cartesian surfaces. Complex refractive index. Paraxial wave equation, propagation of Gaussian beams. Fresnel formulae, total internal reflection. Paraxial approximation of geometrical optics, matrix optics. Two-beam interference, Fizeau-interferometer. Multiple-beam interference, Diffraction gratings, Fabry-Pérot interferometer. Scalar diffraction, Fraunhofer approximation. Diffraction of a spherical wave in the vicinity of the focal spot.
